Ake Sikhule
At Carlswald House Preparatory, we recognise the need to support our learners’ personal growth and development. It is through a meaningful leadership and development programme that our learners can truly be a part of the school and take on roles of responsibility.
We call this programme the Ake Sikhule programme. Ake Sikhule means ‘to grow’ in isiZulu, and that is precisely what we want to encourage and support our children to do.
This programme provides learners with opportunities to:
- Take responsibility for their choices and actions
- Build a sense of pride in their school and community
- Develop self-discipline and self-confidence
- Develop a mature attitude on the sports fields
- Demonstrate a level of responsibility and leadership
- Take control of their position as a role model
Buddy Programme
The Grade 7 learners are currently a part of the CHP Ake Sikhule Leadership programme. This provides them with opportunities to develop their leadership skills in a number of ways. As part of this programme, they take part in a CHP ‘Buddy Programme’.
Each Grade 7 learner is allocated two Grade R ‘buddies’. This forms part of their duties towards their Ake Sikhule award and will further assist in the development of their leadership skills.
The Grade 7 learners visit their ‘little buddies’ weekly, in an allocated time slot. During this time, they play educational games, use the iPads together, sing songs, read stories and much more. They are also encouraged to spend time with their buddy outside of this allocated time where possible.
We have experienced great success with this programme and have seen the benefit it has on both the Grade R and 7 learners
